End of Year Awards
Season 2025–26
A first … we were entertained inside and the ten who were there were spoiled. Mr Little graced us with his presence and Maxine was graced with a lovely thank-you-present a-la-Tom! The backyard botanical garden was its exquisite self and the front worthy of Tom parking his new luxurious limousine on the driveway.

The upmarket “Bunnings” cuisine, followed by palate cleansing fresh fruit, hit the spot before our new President presided over his first trophy presentation ceremony and, rather fittingly, the first trophy to be presented was the “Claret-Jug” to Tom.

Reading of the President report |
Jacko cleaned up the lion’s share of awards (5), which is a tribute to being our lowest handicapper. Personally (Ron writing) I think our most prestigious award is the Green Jacket and Walks has worn it six times now … well done Walks.
Good healthy banter continued after the officialdom was over, especially when the interim report on our new President was read.
Special thanks to my partner for his terrific game of golf, but also for providing Tom with all the details of the winners, which always makes things flow. Also a special tribute to Maxine for putting up with us each year, especially for being our BBQ mistress for our seconds.
See you next year.

HANDICAPPER'S TROPHY
Ronzo reports . . .Cold, wet and miserable was the forecast … warm & fuzzy was the feeling to win this prestigious event on a windless, overcast, perfect day for golf.
It was a tight competition, with only three points separating the four teams. The first nine produced some good off-the-stick efforts, Steve the best with 42 shots and Jacko with 37 shots before he wiped one hole.

GOLDEN PUTTER - Round 2
Steve reports . . . It was the second nine of the Golden Putter challenge. The two overnight leaders were separated on this day. As the leader teed off in the first group, minor sledging, or Mental Disintegration (as another famous sporting Steve would often revert to), was heard directing these sledges in the Hope to get under the skin of this very passionate man.
The news from the first group to T Off has most of the players starting off reasonably well. Chris started off with only two putts on the first two holes. Macca started off with only two putts on the first two holes. Walks started off with only two putts on the first two holes. Things weren’t quite going to plan for the leader, clearly suffering from the sledging. 4 putts after 2 holes. Then mounting a mini comeback with only two putts on the next two holes. It was to be the end of anything spectacular from Squancey for the remaining round.
 |
 |
The putting contest from afar |
At least he was trying at the 17th tee! |
Chris managed his usual consistent style round holding on for 4 one putts and three pars. Well done Chris. The pairing of the two Besties saw six combined one putts between the two of them and no pars. Clearly still riding on the High of having an 8000+ dollar windfall over the weekend and thank you boys for the morning tea.
The second group took off. Steve managed to put his first shot into the nursery and had to take a penalty. The other two players managed a bogey and we all managed two putts. The remainder of the round saw Mr Dalby fluctuating with several good shots and several ordinary shots. He was always thereabouts on the putting side of things but unfortunately a three putt early on did not help.

Straight you little bugger |
Here's hoping . . . on a troublesome round |
Cutting it fine on his way to a double win! |
As for senior chalk, He would not mind me saying this…….witnessing his round was extremely hard to watch. Nothing was going his way. Over the 18 holes junior chalk managed to have no more than two putts with a few one putts thrown in here and there to fortunately claim the GP title. CONGRATULATIONS STEVE on your second Golden Putter success!!

GOLDEN PUTTER - Round 1
Macca reports . . . Hamersley front 9, and the boys in shorts were finding the cool breeze a challenge though it turned into ideal autumn golf weather. One most senior member announced he was planning the wording for this week's report. Let's review the facts.
Just seven players teed off with the Chalk Brothers and Squancey leading off. Two less than optimum first drives and Ronzo in the far bunker but they soon settled in to creditable rounds.
Graham S was consistent, recording his name on the smart new NTP and LD markers. Alas he left for work and missed the announcements of him coming second in both endeavours.
 |
 |
Should I, or shouldn't I? |
Shit yea!! |
He was the leading putter for week 1 with just 14 putts, a gross score of 49 for 38 nett and one par. He did win the complicated and unique four way countback for four players to take third place.Steve was second best putter, a gross of 48 for a second best 34 nett and 15 putts while parring the par 3 fifth hole. Ronzo is still in the competition with 17 putts and though NAGA, had 51 off the stick for 39 nett with one par.
They ended their round a happy threesome. Squancey raced off to work while Ronzo and Steve raced off in their cart to the 9th hole to put pressure on the second group. They were effective as the foursome recorded an aggregate 10 putts, their highest of the round!
The second group handled the first hole well with three of them landing 1.5 metres apart in good shape. Walks was a little wayward but Jacko, Dalbs and Macca were pleased with their drives (on the first hole anyway).
| Macca scored his best round at Hamersley in years with 48 off the stick, a nett 30 with two pars. His putting was OK but a pair of 3 putts contributed to a total of 16 putts. Dalbs was wayward on two holes for a gross 52 and two putts but a neat final three holes put him just off the podium on countback. Jacko had the best gross score at 46,16 putts and two pars on the par 3s to join the group on 38 nett. Walks scored a gross 52 for the other 38 nett and his 20 putts was the NAGA but he had a couple of very near misses and a 4-putt on the last hole. |
 |
 |
Maestro on his way to Par at the 5th |
Lashing out over a neat final three holes |
Overall the field was quite compact with gross scores from 46 to 52; nett score from 30 (abberation) to 39; and putts from 14 to 20 (outlier).
Finally a report has been received by the Match Committee citing ageist behaviour by one of our younger members. When asked by the barista whether we preferred our coffees inside or outside, the accused was heard to respond "Inside please, the old codgers have too much trouble throwing their legs over to sit on the benches outside!"

Hamersley, Stableford
Walks reports . . . Eight players turned out for a Stableford round at Hamersley. Conditions were near-perfect again. First group were Ron, Steve, Jacko and Walks, followed by Squancey, Tom, Macca and Dalbs.
NAGA on the day was Dalbs with a score of only 9 points. His mind was obviously on other things. He started with a 3 pointer par on the opening hole but then his wheels fell off and he only managed another 6 points on the next 8 holes.
 |
 |
 |
Dalbs' dilemma |
A good finish after a troublesome round |
Macca finished seventh with a score of 10 points. He had 4 wipes in his round. He is another one whose form has slumped. Both he and Dalbs have gone from recent winners to bottom of the pack. Expect them both to bounce back.
 |
 |
Lusty but left |
"Nah, just get a new putter" |
Tom finished sixth with a score of 14 points. He had a 4 pointer par on the par 5 14th hole but also wiped three holes.Steve finished fifth with a score of 16 points. There were the usual mighty big hits but his radar was a bit erratic at times as he approached the greens. Finished strongly with three 3 pointers over the last 4 holes.
Squancey finished fourth with a score of 18 points. He continues to play consistently to his 11 handicap. His only blemish on the day was wiping the last hole.
 |
 |
Impending "mighty big hits" |
The podium places were taken by Jacko, Ron and Walks. Jacko and Ron both scored 21 points but it was Ron who won the countback to take second place, and Jacko finished third. The ever-consistent Jacko had a round of 3 pars and 6 bogeys for his 21 points, which would have been good enough to win on most days, but not this day. Ron appeared to be in winning form from the get-go. His opening tee shot on the par 3 10th hole landed 1.5 metres from the hole. He putted for a birdie that touched the edge of the hole but settled for a par. For his entire round his drives were long and straight, and he also sank a couple of long(ish) putts.
And the winner on the day was Walks with 22 points. Started his round with a 4 pointer par and he continued on his merry way with 6 bogeys (3 of them being 3 pointers). He put his success down to the fact that he putted much better than usual.

The Vines, Stableford
NOT THE BURSWOOD TROPHY
Walks reports . . .6 players fronted up to contest the NOT THE BURSWOOD event at THE VINES. The two nines that we played were in great condition. The fairways had lots of undulations but were generally nice and wide. The greens were mostly surrounded by bunkers and the greens themselves looked great but were consistently slower paced than expected.
The weather was mild with overcast skies. In the carpark, we remarked that the weather was ideal for the event. Surprisingly though, it started to rain as we arrived at the first hole and continued for two holes. But, from then on, it was fine for the rest of the day.
The first group was Steve, Squancey and Walks followed by Jacko, Macca and Tom.
NAGA on the day was Macca with a score of 23 stableford points. He never got into top gear having scored 10 points on the first nine holes and 13 points on the second nine. His round included 4 wipes, no pars and only one 3 pointer.
The rest of the field was fairly tightly packed.
Steve finished fifth with 28 points. He had 2 wipes in the first 3 holes but then scored on every other hole. He played some BIG fairway shots that landed on greens but struggled to put away the putts.
Third and fourth places were determined by a countback. Tom and Jacko both finished on 29 points. Jacko claimed the podium spot. Tom finished fourth. He burst out of the blocks with 19 points on the first eight holes (wiped the ninth hole). But then something changed, and he only got 10 points on the second nine holes. Jacko finished third. He had only 3 points after 4 holes but then scored 13 points on the next 5 holes (par, bogie, par, par, par). That gave him 16 points for the first nine holes. He couldn't sustain that brilliant standard of play forever. He wiped the 10th and 12th holes but then played his usual consistent golf to finish with 13 points on the second nine holes.
Squancey finished second with 30 points. He scored only 12 points on the first nine holes. There were highs and lows in his play. He struggled down the fairways but on about 4 occasions he landed great approach shots to the green and finished off with good putting, managing to avoid wipes. On the second nine holes he played with good consistency and scored 18 points.
And the winner on the day was Walks with a score of 32 points. He got through the 18 holes with 2 pars but significantly (and unusually) he had no wipes. He scored 16 points on each of the nine holes.

MATCH PLAY FINAL
Steve reports . . .For only the second time this year as far as I can remember the skies were grey, the wind was blowing and there was a slight chill to the air.
The group insisting to head off first would be Robin, Graham Walker, Graham Squance and Graham Little.
Robin played in two parts – duffing and fluffing and hooking and slicing over the first five holes but somehow picking up 8 points. Then the rough seas calmed and a string of bogeys took him to a round played to handicap. Squancey had a few moments of angst but his "give it all you've got" attack on the ball was paying dividends with a very consistent round of 7 bogeys and eight 2-point holes. Litts was a little out of sorts, that smooth swing seemingly consistent but the ball had different ideas, heading off low or off direction and desperate to avoid the hole on a number of greens.
 |
 |
 |
Squancey was in full flight from the start . . . |
. . but did join the tree lovers once . . |
. . . together with Litts . . . |
Walks was having one of those days where you struggle to strike the ball clean and straight though, after the round, he confessed to carrying an old war injury in one arm that clearly was having an effect. Had a love affair with copious trees for most of the round . . . but he'll be back!!
The second grouping had race Driver Ron and hold-on-tight Steve combining with Jacko and Macca who were playing it out in the Match Play final. My game was consistent, racking up two and three pointers here and there.
Luck for me would play a role being that, if a shot got into a bit of strife, the following shot would make up for the error. My putting was fairly consistent. I would go on to score 20 Stableford points and win the day.
My playing partner Ronzo had a round to forget. Unfortunately nothing seemed to be going his way and I can only imagine his thoughts would be wondering why he bothered to get out of bed. On a brighter note, Macca was there and was more than happy to pass on a few coaching tips and suggestions on where he was going wrong.
I would like to call this "words of wisdom" from our most senior member and clearly these words of wisdom had a good enough effect to allow Ronzo to score enough points to avoid NAGA!
Match Play Final
Macca’s early tee shot and fairway drives left no doubt that this man was not only here to play but to show us all that age shall not weary and that age is no barrier.
It was very impressive to see this old stallion muscle those drives straight down the middle of the fairways with plenty of distance also sustained.
Jacko was hot on his heels, although a little wayward from the standards that we have become accustomed to witnessing every week and that he sets for himself. A miscued chip shot then an easy missed putt left the door wide open for Macca – 3 putts just won’t do it and the door was slammed shut.
On the holes to follow, Macca would continue with his scintillating stroke play and on top of that his putting was also now on track.
To the outsider it was looking as though Macca was building scoreboard pressure on Chris and the usual finesse shown by Chris was slightly adrift.
Nearing the halfway point of this Match Play final, the club's most revered Senior player had the points on the scoreboard and was galloping along like the stallion he is.
If Chris was to become a challenger in this final he was needing to utilise his tremendous skill set. It was time to deploy everything he had in his armoury.
And this is exactly what he did. He parred the par5/15th, just missing out on a birdie. He had steeled his resolve whilst also sensing a shift in the winds. Macca had an erratic nine shots and a wipe in comparison to Jacko‘s Par.
We had now passed the halfway mark and Macca had a convincing lead.
The mood had now changed.
These two were now playing the serious game. The concentration was rife and there was absolutely no discussion of scores overheard by the chalk duo.
The chalks did not know how to analyse exactly the state of play. As Chris has a low handicap and Macca has a high handicap. This left chalk Senior and chalk Junior confused as we pondered how the scoring was playing out, being you needed to take into account handicap, scores off the stick and the possibility of extra considerations. We had no idea how things were playing out. For that matter even how to score this bloody contest???
At the conclusion of play it is of my opinion that Macca had let this one slip through his fingers, as his early and general overall play was very admirable and worthy of a win.
Yet Chris would go on to be the first one to Gallop across that finish line, confirming why he continues to be the season and club player with the most consistent and superior low handicap status.
Congratulations Chris on your hard fought come-from-behind grand final club Match Play win.
As a final note I do apologise for my lengthy ramblings. I just can’t seem to rein it in.
Mind you, there was plenty to celebrate over coffees, hot chocolate and apple juice with Robin's imminent 78th Birthday (cookies and chocs provided) and Squancey's 400 game milestone . . .
| In his 15th season with GBWGC, the Human Dynamo achieved a very significant milestone and is the sixth member to reach 400 games.
Squancey is a great and highly respected club man who expresses his love of our great game in sometimes very colourful ways. He's certainly made his mark:
- Golfing achievements: Has 2 Masters Jackets, his first with a record 41 points; has the distinction of being the inaugural, and only, winner of the South West Masters and Hunter Valley Open; prominent in Long Drive and Nearest the Pin Awards
- Social contributions. Always willing to assist, shining in his support to Chris in away events catering and in accommodation arrangements and chauffeuring for recent Eastern States travels.
HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS SQUANCEY!!.

Kooky's Techno "tree" |
Dalbs reports . . .Just the perfect start to Week 26 with a cool breeze, first off the tee, 8 great golfing mates and a course in pretty good nick. Tom quickly got the teams organised with Squancey striking the first (#$@&%*) blow playing with Jacko, Litts and Macca followed by the Allardice boys, Tom and Dalbs.
There must have been an ill wind that blew no good for three of this group, the exception being Litts who set sail over the first 4 holes parring both Par 3's and piling up 10 pts. Experienced a bit of double bogey ill wind over the next 3 but blew home with a wet sail with 5 pts to play neatly to handicap. Macca had a hit and miss affair starting with 2 misses before getting into scoring, hitting 2 neat bogeys. A miss and almost miss added 1 pt before hitting his way home well with 3 bogeys and 8 pts. His 14 pts were matched by the two single figure handicap players Squancey (9) and Jacko (7). Squancey's hopes were not helped by an opening two wipes and two mid-round double bogeys. Otherwise he recovered well with 2 pars and 3 bogeys to garner 12 of his 14 pts. Jacko would've been looking to make a few pars and avoid any wipes. But his game wasn't quite on song today, only 1 par, two 1-pointers and a wipe at the 17th putting a drag on the scoreline and contributing to a loss in the NAGA countback.
Dalbs had one club to thank for his winning round. Though he struck a few good drives and irons and quietened the chipping monster somewhat, he certainly enjoyed a putting purple patch. Must've been the doppelgänger effect, one-putting 7 of the 9 greens with predictable ease and creating four 3 pt holes. Ronzo was AWOL (Noooooooooo!!!) over the first 3 holes balls flying everywhere and only 2 pts to show. But Jekyll suddenly appeared rattling off bogey/birdie for 7 pts and maintaining his cool with a string of 2 pt finishes to just nudge Tom off the podium.
 |
 |
 |
Aiming for the sun |
In trouble early . . . |
. . . but in rhythm later |
Tom was oscillating between some strong, well-considered, well struck shots/putts over 5 holes (for 13 pts) and the other less desirable sort (for 3 points) and in doing so pipped Steve on the scoreboard. The 2026 MM champion wasn't mucking around clubbing 9 pts over the first 4 holes with the odd stray shot. But unfortunately the strays increased in intensity over 3 (wipes) of the last 5 holes interspersed with bogey/par (and 6 pts).

Just hangin' round during the mystical 15 min. delay |
Macca reports . . .Another perfect golf day and a full roll-up. This despite an unexpected 15 minute delay of opening time. Messrs Squance, Little, Dalby and McLennan led off followed by Messrs Allardice x 2, Jackson and Joseph.
Each group had a short delay in their round: Dalbs lost two balls in unfortunate and mystical circumstances where his playing partners watched one shot into the tree line on the 11th and another into a large downed branch later in the round. Despite cries of "we've got it" and Squancey manhandling huge branches, no balls were found. A slight delay was reported by the second group when one unnamed competitor lined up to putt . . . his oversized white ball marker!
Looking at actual stroke scores, and adjusting for wipes (there were five of them) they ranged from Squancy on 45 to Tom and Ronzo on 52. The number of pars score was a predictor of final positions. The first five each hit two pars, Dalbs (6th) hit one par, and the tail enders didn't score a par.
The succinctness of the report has been expanded by a plethora of photos.

Hamersley, Par
 |
 |
First at the gate . . . |
. . . with a view to appreciate |
Ronzo reports . . . As usual boyz this is not your usual report, but read on … all done by AI … Allardice Intelligence … and it was a pleasure for both the Allardices to make the podium … just ask us.
Great, but chillier morning than usual … we’d better get used to it! The game was “par”, wonderful (not) as the author normally states … and 8 of us to battle it out.
THE GAME
Collectively these were the results from the 72 holes we played (8 players x 9 holes).
- Possible pars off the stick - 72. Actual - 15
- Collectively we managed to par all but holes 15 & 17
- The 16th was obviously the easiest - 4 managed par
- Collectively our efforts were -
Pluses - 24 - Ron had the most - 5
Zeroes - 29 - Bin had the most - 6
Minuses - 19 - CJ-GM-GW-GL - 3 each
In hindsight, Ron had a day out and Litts could have stayed in bed!!
OBSERVATIONS
Macca - The Marvellous - played with “umpteen” stitches all over his body and none came apart.
Squancey - came in second and rumoured he did that to avoid writing the report.
Steve - according to him “he lost it” on the golf course but managed to make the podium.
 |
 |
 |
Squancey's great long putt attempt which just missed |
I'll just tap this onto the fairway . . . |
. . . No I won't! |
Jacko - his game obviously put off worrying about the catering for the Mandurah Masters.
Bin - was also fussing about the Mandurah Masters, working on the ever so brilliant program.
Walks - had his mind on his holiday in Melbourne next week … wonder if he will make the plane.
Litts - as suggested, could have stayed home and concentrated on his upcoming sojourn down south.
 |
 |
 |
Litts had a great start . . . |
Houdini does it again |
Keep your head down Walks |
OTHER
- Discussion arose around the next “Not the Mornington Masters”, especially if it is held on the Murray (VIC/NSW) … or possibly if held on the Mornington Peninsula opulent accommodation should be considered.
- A new trophy was suggested, called “The BJ”

The usual COT afters, with “slightly warmer” hot drinks and special treats.

Hamersley, Stableford
Squancey reports . . . After several months in the wilderness, Squancey returns to the number 1 position on the podium.
The starting time change by Macca was a stroke of genius. Had we started at the normal time we would have had to use glow balls as it was so dark. Even though Macca had organised the tee off time for 6.00am there were another 2 groups trying to muscle into our spot. The 1st group, just one player had bolted. The 2nd group was about to tee off, but with some gentle persuasion, and a piece of
4 X 4 they relinquished their spot.
Walks, Jacko and Dalbs were the 1st group to tee off. Both Jacko and Walks played consistent golf with 18 and 19 points respectively. Walks starting with a 4 pointer and finishing with 2, 3 pointers. Walks managed to score on all holes, but his 3, 1 pointers brought him back to the field. Jacko was picking up 2 and 3 points, but scoring 2, 1 pointers on the last 2 hole put a dent in his score, ending up on 18 points. Chris, continued with picking up the longest drive.
 |
 |
A slight blemish, but very few today |
Drives at the 17th - in two quite different directions |
Dalbs with 4, 1 pointers and a wipe, destroyed his score. If it was not for a par on the highest handicap hole, the par 4, 13th hole, his score of 14 would have been even worse.
Ronzo, Steve, Macca and Squancey made up the last group. Ronzo and Squancey finished on 19 points, the same as Walks. Squancey won on a count back from Ronzo and Walks.
 |
 |
Careful Squancey, I'm watching you! |
I can feel a win coming on |
 |
Hmmm. . . what's going wrong? |
Ronzo, Steve and Macca sprayed their tee shot on the 10th hole. Steve wiped this hole and set the stage for the rest of the round. He had trouble with his drives, dragging most of them into the trees on the left side of the fairway. He was allowing for his normal slice, but the slice had abandoned him. Another wipe, and 3, 1 pointers, put an end to Steve accruing any reasonable score. With a score of 12, one could suggest that he is preparing his handicap for Mandurah. Ronzo started off shakily with 1 point on the 10th. With only 1 more, 1 pointer on the 14th hole, and 3, 3 pointers, Ronzo put a good round of golf together. A couple of those Ronzo drives had shown up to excite the crowd. Squancey managed to keep all his drives on the fairways. It was only a couple of misguided 2nd shots that resulted in wiping one hole and picking up a single point on another. With par on both par threes, and picking up an additional 2, 3 pointers, with some good putting, resulted in a winning score card.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - Round 2
Macca and mate report . . . . A big roll-up of eight starters in slightly damp conditions but with the bonus of no wind. It was overcast and the last day of Hamersley's Summer timetable so the 5.30am tee time was quite dark. Our first group started nearly ten minutes late and took off into the gloom.
 |
 |
We're off with Steve's straight zoom into
the gloom |
Straightening the ship |
The first group correspondent (thanks Mate) reports: Jacko and Steve fired up early with both landing their tee shots on the 10th green, and parring.
Jacko continued his good form almost parring the 11th and then taking out the NTP and parring the 12th on his way to three pars in the round. He finished with a nett 37.
Steve hit some great tee shots and fairway shots but also found the tree line quite a lot. Playing to handicap, with two pars, Steve ended up as the preantepenultimate with his nett 36. (I knew you would like the sound of that Steve).
Ronzo started slowly but shot the best score off the stick score of 44 for a nett 33 and third place. He had three pars but a blow-up 8 on the 11th cost him a higher finish.
Walks had a shocker of a day. Several tee shots went deep into the trees and his putting was poor. His only highlight was a par on the 17th and he ended up NAGA by a big margin.
The second group played pretty well with Dalbs, a non-starter in week 1, just breaking 50 gross for a nett 37. He shot two pars but had a fumbled 7 on the par 3 16th.
Litts was the week 1 leader, parred the three par 3s, but was another who had a triple bogey on the 482 metre 11th. He was not happy with his drives regularly staying on the ground. He had what would have been a great championship winning approach that unluckily teetered on the edge of the 17th hole, reminiscent of Squancey's near ace last week.
 |
 |
 |
A great start - crisp drive to right of green, deft chip and short putt for par |
A cruel twist, reminiscent of Squancey's near Hole-in-One |
Squancey played well to come in second with a nett 32 with three pars in a consistent round. Some nice drives were a feature of his controlled effort.
 |
 |
 |
A mishit at the 14th . . . but a good recovery |
Oh so close at the 18th |
Macca won week 2 with a nett 30. He was striking the ball reasonably well and sank some longish putts. He had just one par but, unusual for him, no score above 6.

 |
Compared with 2024–25:
- Today's winner had an identical first round score (net 37) but a major second round reversal this Championship (net 30 compared with net 47!);
- Jacko was the pinnacle of consistency hitting identical net score rounds of 39 and 37;
- Walks hit an identical second round score this Championship of net 42!
Over the history of the Championship:
- The lowest winning score was achieved by Walks in the 2013-14 season: a net 61. At the same time he hit the lowest round score of net 29.
- Walks scored another net 29 in the 2022-23 season going on to win with the second lowest winning net score of 62, a score achieved by Ronzo in the previous 2021-22 season.

Hamersley, Stroke
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - Round 1
Litts and Macca report . . . It was a much cooler morning, a relief after the hot conditions of Monday. Seven players from the club plus one public player that joined our group. More on him later. The group of four members hit off first then the group of three plus the visitor.
The first tee had Jacko and Macca wandering off into the woods while the Allardice Twins zoomed off in their EV. The problem first hole was not touched by wayward drives resulting in 6s and 7s.
Jacko had trouble with his drives which often tailed off into the tree line. Most unlike the Master! He did regain his mojo on the 8th hole to card the winning Long Drive. He parred both par 3s but missed out on the NTP. His round was notable for uncharacteristically missing three close putts. He had a nett 39 but will be threatening coming from behind next week.
Macca was playing under his handicap for the first eight holes but his sloppy 9 on the ninth hole dragged him down to finish with a nett 37. A few successful pressure putts of about two metres were the only highlights.
Steve was another of the boys scoring a nett 37 with one par and a number of booming drives. He was not alone in still being a little wayward around the course. The par 3 seventh hole was a mystery with a good sounding first shot missed by all as it blasted into the sun and was never found. Definitely the fault of his playing partners!
Ronzo was another of those scoring a par on the par 3 fifth with an NTP contender. He had a mixed round with a trio of triple bogeys. Like Chalk Two he had a number of great shots but ended with a 39.
The group of three plus one was next off. Litts and Squancey managed middle of the road bogies but Walks found one bunker and then another with a triple as a result. Our guest Campbell hit an ordinary drive into the tree line that gave no hint of the booming drives and approach shots we were to see later on.
The Little One had a steady round and didn’t make too many mistakes except for a three putt from a relatively short distance on the sixth. As above Squancey had a steady first hole but ran into trouble in the next three holes. He recovered nicely to play good golf for the remaining five holes. He finished with a credible net par result.
Walks had a pretty poor start by his standards and was eleven over par after the first four holes. He recovered well and played steady golf for the rest of the round to leave himself with a chance next week.
 |
 |
 |
Hole-in-One attempts don't get any closer at the Par 3 5th! |
Walks attempting to steady the ship |
Visitor Campbell unleashing a boomer |
The star hole of the round overall was definitely the par three fifth. Collectively the seven players parred the hole. Two birdies, three pars and two bogies. The highlight was Squancey’s approach that ran around the hole and finished an inch or two away from it. Note that he was made to putt it out, there was no gimmee. What a great birdie and so close to his first hole in one, well done Squancey. Litts hit a decent shot in and sank a five to six metre putt to claim another birdie. Two birdies on one hole. Could be a record?
The morning was complete with coffees, soft drink, hot chocolate and Marg Allardice’s home-made fruit cake. Thank you Margaret. The morning tea has become a feature of our post-game festivities. Presentations went relatively smoothly until it got to the NAGA announcement. Jacko was keen to avoid his first NAGA, checked the count backs and declared that in fact the NAGA title belonged to Ron!

JOONDALUP CLASSIC
Walks reports . . . The standout event of the year on the GBWGC calendar is always the game at Joondalup Country Club. It may be expensive but it is definitely worth the experience. Seven players fronted up on a perfect, mild summer’s day.
 |
We're off! |
The lead group of three was Macca, Squancey and Jacko, followed by the foursome of Ronzo, Dalbs, Steve and Walks. The two nines we played were Lake and Quarry.
The threesome had a good battle on the first nine with Jacko and Squancey both scoring 17 points and Macca scoring 15 points. But it was Jacko, in his usual consistent way, that scored 15 points on the second nine while Squancey and Macca became more erratic. Squancey left a few putts languishing on the edge of the hole - he'll have to learn to speak a different languish.
The group of 4 all had their moments of glory and some dark times. Ronzo’s first hole was a shocker. He mishit his first half a dozen shots and wiped the hole before he got to the green. But then he got into a good rhythm, scored consistently on the next 8 holes and scored 16 points after nine holes. On the second nine he scored two brilliant pars, both times sinking long putts, but also finished the round with a trio of wipes. Dalbs was steady through the first nine holes scoring 14 points. But he lost his way early on the second nine when he also had a trio of wipes in a row.

Steve played some great tee shots and approaches to greens but every now and then he would throw in a shocking wild shot. He had three wipes and two pars on the day. His scoring was consistent with 16 points on each nine.

What goes down must come up (and it did) |
Walks was in good form with his driver and fairway shots but his putting let him down. Amazingly he had no wipes but also no pars. Managed to score 20 points on the first nine which include four 3-pointers, and then 16 points on the second nine.

Hamersley, Stroke . . . oops, Stableford
Dalbs reports . . . Our 6.30 extra sleep-in tee-off times got a rude awakening, a madcap Hamersley booking system giving Macca nightmares before he finally put the issue to bed resulting in an earlier tee-off. But, with a hot day forecast, it seemed a blessing though a brisk, crisp Easterly made for a cool start. What started out as a fixtured Stroke event morphed into Stableford and no one was complaining. Seven starters and a Round 2 Match Play to decide the second Finalist.
 |
We're off! |
Jacko, Walks and Steve were elected to set the pace but, apart from Steve, the former couldn't maintain the pace particularly on the card. Jacko was having a whirlwind start with par, par, wipe, wipe, par, wipe. It had a certain rhythm to it except the bit where one shot rebounded some distance behind where he started. A modest finish with no further wipes but it still implanted NAGA thoughts. Walks was only one wipe behind and shared the "bit where one shot rebounded some distance behind where he started". He just couldn't shake off the double bogey blues and most likely was also entertaining the NAGA possibility. Stuttering Steve had also set up a catchy rhythm - double, wipe, par, double, wipe . . . triple?? for 7 pts. It was during this rollocking ride that he performed the triple "windy". But it was Star Studded Steve who careered home over the final three holes with par, bogey, par for a 10 pt haul and a third today on countback.
 |
 |
| Great approach at 15 to win the hole |
Bush trouble at 17 for a wipe |
Match Play. The Karrinyup Kids were head-to-head for a place in the Final. A wipe at the 11th and Dalbs was 1-down but his par at the 12th squared the match. It was Macca's turn to wipe at the 13th but his ferocious comeback on the 14th got the match back to square. There were matching doubles at the 15th but Macca's extra handicap stroke had Dalbs 1-down and it remained that way after the par 16th, each scoring bogies. After Macca's bush bashing at the 17th, a wipe had the match square going to the final hole. After a strong Long Drive effort, Dalbs went bush but recovered to notch bogey while Macca was lying 2 with a tree partly blocking his path to the green. Two great shots later, he was around 2 metres from the hole. No pressure . . potted it with ease to snatch a great win in a closely fought match.
Their partners Squancey and Litts had mixed results. Squancey was a delicate mix of pounding and mishit drives, pounding and mishit irons and the odd "just missed" putts for an eclectic mix of two pars, two doubles and two triples but he still drew with Steve on 17 pts only to be zapped on countback. Litts couldn't take a trick. Hit some sweet straight (and not so straight) drives and some measured fairway shots but struck trouble on the greens where many putts went begging. There were two sighs of relief when the NAGA winner was announced!

Hamersley, Stableford
Dalbs reports . . . Back to enjoying those 6.30 tee offs on a balmy morning with 7 players. With Tom the Traveller off to the nation's capital for more family frolics, his Match Play with Jacko was to be a highlight of the morning. The lowlight was when Dalbs was preparing his bits on the shared cart with Ronzo only to discover that the invaluable camera was missing. A quick trot retracing his path from the car was in vain. And at time of writing still no joy with the pro shop ready to phone if someone hands it in. But, back to the golf . .
Litts, Macca and Squancey led the charge. Litts, it seems, found his groove early rattling off an opening par and three bogeys for 10 pts after 4 holes. Considering his limited exposure to the game, you'd expect a double or two and he obliged with three over the final 5 holes interspersed with another fine par and bogey to play to handicap (the club's second lowest). Macca also enjoyed playing to, or bettering, handicap over the first 5 holes, his 12 pts a good launching pad for the homeward run. But two 1 pt holes, a triple bogey and double on the Index 9 ninth hole, made for somewhat harder landing than he'd most likely planned but still notched a respectable 18 pts. Squancey managed to settle into a rhythm over the round, scoring annoying doubles on the odd numbered holes and 2 pars and 2 bogeys on the even numbered until preparing to tee off at the 18th with 16 pts in the bag. It was never audibly apparent but a wipe left him stranded on that pts tally.

Match Play. Ronzo and Dalbs had the pleasure of watching the shootout between Tom and Jacko. It was survival of the fittest over the first two holes as drives and irons headed off in unintended directions, each with bogey and a double with Tom's handicap stroke having him 1-up after the 11th. Tom's heebie-jeebies at the par 3 12th ended in a wipe as Jacko made par and NTP to square it up. They stayed in touch over the next four holes, Jacko steadying the ship with par and 3 bogies while Tom still had anxious

moments but was helped by an extra handicap stroke on three of the holes. Jacko's steady game held over the 17th as Tom tried vainly to compete, including from the 18th fairway, but inevitably strode to the 18th tee 1-down. And the heebie-jeebies made one more appearance, Tom wiping the last as Jacko notched another bogey for a 2-up win.
Dalbs enjoyed strong drives and fairway shots with uncharacteristically good approach shots and putts to hit 3 pars and be just 6 shots over after the 7 holes on which he scored. Made a complete hash of the par 3s, including landing his drive at the par 3 16th a severe left where Steve and Ronzo had previously experienced the ignominy of it all. Ronzo took a while to settle into his game, some wayward tee to green play settling him into a mainly double bogey routine over the first six holes for 9 pts. By this stage the last of the rust had fallen off and he bogeyed all the way home with a round saving 7 pts.
And so it came to pass that last week's winner was this week's NAGA while last week's NAGA (with 19 pts) was this week's winner (with 19 pts). And the coffee and Ronzo's much appreciated nibbles set the scene for a very relaxing and enjoyable conflab.

Kennedy Bay, Stableford
SOUTH OF RIVER - Day 2
The old foe - Kennedy Bay. It's a course that has many ways to bite you, particularly if you're unfortunate enough to land in one of the 115 pot style bunkers. It can also be forgiving with a good many wide fairways to potentially overcome some mishits. The golf course sits at the heart of the new $425 million master-planned Kennedy Bay coastal development by Western Australia Beach and Golf Resort. And no expense was spared creating a stylish pro shop and restaurant facilities.
There were six starters under clear skies and a strident easterly which reversed to a very blustery westerly as we negotiated the back nine making for tricky conditions coming home. Jacko, Squancey and Walks were the trail blazers followed by Tom, Macca and Dalbs.
Squancey was a model of scoring consistency and the only player not to wipe a hole. No pars, but bogied the majority of holes (10) to take second place. No outcries detected by the following group but then the strong winds may explain that. Walks threw in a mixed bag, starting superbly with par and 4 pts before three 1 pt holes, two 3 pt holes and just 2 pts for the next three. His impressive opening salvo on the back nine of two pars and two bogies for 10 pts ceased abruptly, just 5 pts with 3 wipes seeing him out. But he'd done enough for third placing and was thankful for those wide fairways helping to ease the pain somewhat on errant drives. Jacko had a task ahead of him with a starting handicap of 12. Needed a few par holes but could only manage 1 today balanced by birdie at the 15th. A wipe and 5 doubles put a dent in his efforts.
Tom was the pinnacle of the pendulum swing and unerring concentration, rattling off great drives and handy approaches to the green. Recovered well from errant shots to card 17 pts out and 19 pts in for a decisive win.Dalbs leapt out of the blocks with 2 bogies and 5 pts. From then on, though his tee and fairway shots held up for most of the round, there was the short game to contend with. On a scale of 1 = Bearable to 10 = Diabolical, his short game performance was a 15 contributing to 8 wiped holes but reckons he wouldn't have missed the experience for quids.

Macca was a bit Jekyll and Hyde, mixing some great drives, fairway shots, nifty chips and handy putts with shots of the opposite persuasion most notably over the last two holes of each nine which resulted in 3 wipes and a 1 pointer, a measure of tiredness a contributing factor.
Coffee, the odd beer, chips and dips and some humorous banter on the verandah was a most pleasant way end to the morning shared with Mr Little who just happened to be in the area. Well done Litts.

Rockingham, Stableford
SOUTH OF RIVER - Day 1
Walks reports . . . Booking was for 6 players but only 5 showed up. Turned out that Macca was still thinking Tuesday golf. But Jacko surmised that Macca only wins every other week so he didn’t bother to get out of bed because it was not his turn. Regardless, 5 players played the course. The weather was perfect and the course was in great shape.
Squancey, Tom and Walks were the first group, followed by Jacko and son-in-law Storm.
Squancey started strongly with 8 points after the first 3 holes but then scored only 7 points on the next 6 holes to turn with 15 points. His putting was letting him down. He was more consistent on the second nine. He had 4 pars on the day and finished with 33 points.
Tom had 2 pars but they were offset by 4 wipes and 5 one pointers. Finished with 26 points and was NAGA on the day.
Walks had some wayward drives on the first nine but he compensated with some good recovery shots and steady putting. He turned with 16 points. On the second nine his drives were much better but his putting slipped. Finished with 34 points and was the winner on the day.
Jacko had 6 pars and 6 bogeys and finished on 31 points.
Storm had one par but only wiped 2 holes. Ended up on 29 points.
Everybody was impressed with the course and it should be in next year’s South of the River round.

CHRISTMAS CUP
Macca reports . . . . . . . A warm but windy morning with ten setting out bedecked with another Ronzo initiative - a three of Tom, Jacko and Litts; followed by Chalk 1, Chalk 2, Squancey and Macca; then Walks, Dalbs and ACT rep Jeff, a pleasing addition. The golf was a mere preliminary to breakfast at The House of Joseph but the Major event brought out a focus on golf for a couple of hours.
 |
 |
 |
A more handsome group you'd never find |
They're off . . . Dasher . . . |
. . . and Comet |
Jacko had a good-looking card with the only blemish a wipe on the par 4 12th. He needed just 35 strokes for a solid round of three pars and a birdie on the par 4 17th for 18 points and 4th place on a countback from Dalbs. Tom was one point behind Jacko with 17 points and 49 strokes but one wipe on the 10th hole and pars on the two par 3s. Litts had one par and claimed to have been involved in some bush bashing but scored on all holes for 16 points and 48 strokes for 9th position.
 |
 |
 |
"C'mon Macca, you can win this" |
A 2 point closing hole |
Houston, we have lift off |
Ronzo and Steve cruised around with Chalk 2 being a little wayward but still scoring two pars and, like a couple of others, wiping the 15th hole. He finished third overall and signalled a return to top golf after straightening a few things out (such as his monster drives).
For Chalk 1 the auditor found a one-point error and his score dropped to 20 points for a sound second place. He scored on every hole and had two pars in a total score of 47 strokes. His game was more relaxed than his usual high-octane swing and his moderated style produced a more accurate result, perhaps reflecting the wisdom of his 78 years? Macca managed just one par, took 48 strokes, but scored 21 points and was consistent for a close win from Ronzo. His drive at the par 3 16th was a short mishit but unfazed he remarked "Put me down for a 3". And that's what he scored! You will all be delighted he won the Christmas Cup for the sixth time, two wins up on the second winningest player and breakfast guest Scobes! Macca retains the questionable trophy from last season.
Squancey's game was for the most part a picture of quiet concentration. Members in other groups claim to have overheard from neighbouring fairways some of his commentary on the game of golf around latter holes. His 17 points (after a post-game audit) put him in 8th place on a three way countback behind Tom and Jeff. He took just 42 strokes plus a wipe on the 15th hole, including two nice pars.
 |
 |
 |
Making long putts look easy |
Sticking together in times of trouble |
The third group scored solidly. Dalbs carded 18 points including two pars. He took just 42 strokes plus a wipe on the 10th hole.
Two wipes didn't help Walks. He parred the 12th hole but wipes on the 16th and 18th landed him his 1st NAGA this season.
Jeff was a very welcome visitor. He scored one par on the 14th but a wipe on the 11th cost him a possible podium place with 17 points. The borrowed David Jackson clubs worked quite well for Jeff to score just one point off playing to handicap.
Back at the House of Joseph . . .
. . . there were 11 at the table with Scobes thankfully available to join us.

Coffee o'clock |
Each received a Christmas card and gift – fantastic!! All were then treated to a sumptuous Joseph breakfast of fruit juices, cherry yoghurt (Macca: For the cherryatrics!"), breakfast buns, curry puffs (Vego, Chicken and Beef!), a colourful fruit platter and fruit mince pies and mini muffins washed down with Reggie's excellent made-to-order coffees. The Bon Bons were also a treat, containing little bottles of cocktail syrup of various flavours – Lychee Martini, Mango Daiquiri, Classic Margarita (hic!).
Never to be outdone, the Allardices were out with the presentations – Steve inducting us as Life Time members into the Old Bastards Golf Club.
Ronzo presented mine hosts with two framed photos – to Reggie a treasured photo of her Mum; for Tom, that classic image of the GBWGC banner on Gokyo Peak in Nepal.
Thank you Reggie and Tom. A Christmas breakfast not to be forgotten.

Hamersley, Stableford
Ronzo reports . . . . . . . Note Boyz … this is written with AI … “Allardice Intelligence”
Lovely warm morning with eight starters … unfortunately only seven finishers with Walks needing to leave at the end of the 11th hole.
Ronzo had a day out, winning for the first time this season and also winning his first long drive for the year, “pipping” Macca by half a club length. Ron’s reaction … “Yubba Dubba Doo” to both.

|
 |
 |
Still knocking around in the bush |
Screech . . . I don't think I can watch this . . . |
. . . and anguish as the putt missed by "That much" |
His playing partner, Mr Little, had a mixed bag, but like Ron, failed only on one hole to not score. At one stage, after hearing one of Squancey’s “outcrys”, Mr Little said … “I know what you mean after missing “almost a gimmie”.
Sir Robin was left to score his own card after Walks left and said … “this will be an easy win now I can score my own card” … it wasn’t to be, but he scored on every hole. Bin’s biggest thrill was making the three ladies behind us “cackle” like you wouldn’t believe.
The foursome in front of us were “prim and proper” … to be expected when playing with Chris.
Tom commented how he was a constant “bridesmaid” of late and then went on to tell us a long story of the “he-she’s” he encountered in Bangkok … his real problem is he is still suffering from “rarefied-air” … got to admit 20 points was a good effort.
Squancey obviously had his mind on an invitation to be a guest speaker at 10am. A score of 18 obviously is playing to his handicap and not to be sneezed at, failing to score on only one hole isn’t bad either. However, when complimented during the game about a good shot, his comment was … “where did that come from?!!”
Macca wasn’t happy … he didn’t bother the scorers on three holes, cannot put two wins together (every second week is not bad though), got pipped for the long drive, ordered too many coffees and had to leave early … it’s his turn to win next week.
Chris scored on every hole and none less than two points, scored better than his handicap, parred three holes, won the nearest to the pin and made the podium … according to Chris, a bit of a “ho-hum” round and next week he could be Santa … ho-ho-ho

MATCH PLAY
 |
 |
Oops . . . headed left |
Short drive - great 2nd |
Macca reports . . . . . . Perfect weather; good greens; OK fairways, and the same scrappy, apparently nematode-ridden tee boxes! Meanwhile there has been deep and meaningful discussion of the two 'new' holes 10 and 18 at Hamersley. And there was mixed success off the tee at the makeshift 10th . . .
BREAKING NEWS - Little and Jackson (sounds like a shady law firm) have a resolution in hand for those new holes with the promise of implementation by Captain Walker!
 |
Litts, take notice! |
Match Play
Each pairing ensured keen competition with Little v Joseph and Walker v McLennan in the first group.
Litts v Tom: Ga Little had a head start on Tom who was astray early (coming down to our level from his overseas training camp). Ga had the occasional uncharacteristic inaccuracy while Tom responded with pluses on the final holes to win 2 up. Good golf from both with Litts taking 41 strokes including two pars, plus a wipe and Tom carding just 39 strokes including two parsand a wipe.
Macca v Walks: A little more tense was the tussle between Walks and Macca. Walks was driving off the tee brilliantly taking just 46 strokes including two pars but two double bogies proved costly. Macca carded 42 strokes and one wipe and holed a two metre putt on the 18th to win 1 up. Walks ran out of handicap at the end while Macca finished with a spare point.
Par Bisque
The second group consisted of Jacko, Squancey, Dalbs and Go-Cart Ronzo. Whether from low handicaps or waywardness the score cards show Jacko had just 30 strokes, a nice four pars and two wipes while Squancey had 36 strokes with one par and wipes on the same holes as Jacko (14 and 15). Dalbs, the eventual NAGA, shared a +1 score with Squancey and Litts both losing the countback.
| Tom won third place with +3 sharing followed by Jacko, then Ronzo on another countback. Walks, now expert in handling countbacks, was beaten for first by Macca sharing a +5 score line. Sorry Ronzo but Par Bisque was the winner on the day with Dalbs and Ronzo misusing one point each by scoring the 10th

It was hit drive straight to Macca's post game for the most delightful breakfast with mine hosts Graeme and Jeannie excelling in their choice of very tasty morsels and with coffee to fill hungry tummies. Ronzo surprised with a special presentation to Jeannie - a record of Macca's maiden 2025 Binningup Open triumph! BIG THANK YOU MACCAS! |

PRESIDENT'S TROPHY
and MATCH PLAY
Chris reports . . . . . It’s a major guys, but not that you’d know it, . . . the usual razzamatazz of the Presidents Trophy would have been conspicuously absent, if anyone realised that it was the President’s Trophy, with no president to hit the ceremonial first ball and no mention of the event as such. Nevertheless . . . there were 8 contenders for the trophy and 2 match play deciders on the side.
 |
 |
Getting Better With Greater
Concentration |
Talking tactics? |
Litts and Ronzo led the way, refereeing the match play qualifier between Walks and Ironman. Litts stood on the twelfth tee with just 2 points but a par and 2 bogeys seemed to be the spark he needed until two more 1 pointers extinguished that flame, although he threw in a 3 pointer at the last for 16. Ronzo had a similar start to Litts with two 1 pointers, but brought out the inner golfer to score 12 points over the next four holes, before easing back with 1 point and a wipe, finishing with a 3 for 18.
 |
 |
Both began with fairway bound drives but Steve couldn't keep it up |
Match Play: After three holes, the match play between Walks and Steve was all square. Walks was having problems with the putter but that didn’t stop him picking up an NTP and LD through the round. We know Steve can hit the ball a fair way but he just couldn’t hit a fairway. Ironman was MIA but his alter-ego Woodman was rampant - in the tree-line on just about every hole with several unplayable shots and lost balls. He just kept hitting trees as he tried to blast his way through, one amazing shot from the tree-line hitting a huge tree 40 metres in front and rebounding back at least 40 metres behind (what’s the opposite of a Little Bounce?). With both players trying to snatch NAGA, in the end Walks won the match play 2 and 1, amassing 15 points over Steve’s 11.
The second foursome included Macca and Dalbs, with Squancey and Jacko slugging it out in their Round 1 match. Macca staked a claim early with 9 points through four holes before 2 wipes derailed his charge, but 8 points on the countback holes, helped in no small part by a par on 17, thrust him back in the mix. Dalbs was a little more sedate early with 2 wipes, then rallied with 8 points over the next three, briefly dragging him into contention, but he faded a little to finish with 7 points over the remaining holes.
Match Play: Jacko was one up over Squancey in the match play, courtesy of a par at eleven, but Squancey grabbed it back at the next with an awful t(r)ee shot, an (expletive deleted) pitch-and-run to pin-high off the edge of the green and a 7 metre putt . The beast was awakened, and with a shot at the thirteenth, a five for 3 was looking the goods until Jacko parred and made the familiar call “I’ll have a half” (for those who still remember Love Thy Neighbour ).
 |
 |
 |
From a middle of the fairway drive, this cracking fairway shot . . . |
. . . followed by a crisp approach to within 2m of the pin . . . |
. . . and a clutch putt – and that's how you par the Index 2 13th! |
That spelled the end of Squancey’s run and with Jacko making par and bogeys through seventeen, the match finished 2 and 1. Squancey put together 16 points and Jacko posted 20. Chris's second Presidents success takes his number of Award wins to 60, 9 wins clear of the next most successful Awards winner - Ronzo with 51.

Steve's finally been "tagged" |
Macca reports . . . . .The Hamersley course excelled today in one vital aspect - no dugites. Nevertheless a volley of criticism was heard about the shoddy tee boxes, the untidy rough, very average fairways and just reasonable, though improving greens. Cool, windy conditions for the last game of Spring looked ideal for golf.
Match Play - the first Match Play game, featuring Allardice Snr and Dalby, resulted in a fairly close win to Robin, 2 up. It was a modest squared first hole before a little Ronzo waywardness and Dalbs went 1 up. Ronzo's 30m drive into bush at the 3rd with Dalbs on the green for an NTP had the thin man smiling. A magnificent Ronzo recovery to within 2m of the hole and a clinch putt squared it up after an RD 3 putt. It was stroke for stroke at the 13th before the Ronzo wobbles set in for two wipes and 2 down. His Par 3 antics returned at the 16th with a drive 30m short. a pitch to 2m from the hole and another terrific clutch putt to pull one back after Dalbs' chip and 2 putts. All square at the 17th and Ronzo was keen to square the match until the wobbles and a wipe sealed his fate.

A short long putt |
The first group consisted of early Leavers Squancey, Dalby and Allardice Jnr with driver Allardice Snr. Ronzo managed a 13 point NAGA owing to the unrelenting pressure of Dalbs. Although Ronzo parred both the par 3s, he wiped three holes. Dalbs had a consistent seven bogies and two doubles climbing the lower rung of the podium with 18 points on a countback from Squancey. A high point was his NTP. Squancey's quiet demeanour (from a distance) reflected his success in playing to handicap and scoring just the second birdie of the season on the 11th. He scored 7 of his points on the par 5s with the birdie and a par. Watch future reports to see Steve return to his previous prowess. His first drive looked as though he was there already but a few wayward holes kept him to 15 points.

How did that miss? |
The second group included Macca, Litts and Jacko. All Macca did was go around in 51, par the two par 3s and score on every hole for a winning 20 points. Litts went around in a creditable 46 strokes, with one par, for second place. He was unusually wayward on a couple of fairways but putted quite well. Jacko had one par and five bogies but one wipe and a couple of doubles cost him a podium place. Generally he had solid putts (though three putted twice) and a long drive win.
Jacko performed stand-in Captain duties faultlessly, and food providor Ronzo's slices were perfection.

Hamersley, Stableford
Litts reports . . . . . It was overcast and definitely cooler than the previous morning. We were down to six players with some absences due to illness and overseas travel. They were missed but more on that later.
The first group hit off on time and it comprised Squancey, Walks and Litts. The softball/baseball twins started off with their usual tailored fades around the corner while Litts hit his into the bush on the right. Other than his first drive Squancey didn’t have a great start with one point for the first two holes. Things turned around with a couple of three pointers to get him back on track. From then on things got a little noisier as he struggled to maintain his form and his composure. He finished off scoring a respectable sixteen points off a twelve handicap. Walks also started slowly over the first few holes but played good golf from then on including three pointers on the16th and 17th holes. Litts had a pretty reasonable day except for a wipe on the 14th but had to rely on some lucky recoveries to keep him on track.
The second group consisted of Steve, Jacko and Macca. It was good to see Steve back in action after his major medical procedures. He didn’t have a great day and was unable to back up his previous form at Hamersley. He was also off a twelve handicap and he struggled a little with two wipes and three one pointers. Despite that, he finished off with five points on the last two holes and that bought a smile to his dial. Chris was on a challenging seven handicap but he started well with two over the card in the first four holes but then things went awry as he wiped the 14th and 15th. He finished off the round with six points on the last three holes to finish with a credible fifteen points given his handicap. Macca was playing in his first appearance since his epic win in the Binningup Open. He obviously played well throughout the round but struggled a bit on the last two holes (don’t we all) and that spoiled an otherwise good round. Two three pointers and no wipes.
Coffee and presentations: There were key absentees today that raised issues about leadership, photos, recording of results for WhatsApp and morning tea. We got through it well enough but zero food and zero photographs. Come back soon guys!

MELBOURNE CUP
Dalbs reports . . . . . There was rumbling in the suburbs, for the clouds had gathered round, and the thunderstorm was bound to have it's way. But the weather gods had changed their mind, and not a drop was there to be found. Seven starters to face the starters gun and all were very pleased to see Iron Man stride to the tee to commence the race. We were joined by one ring-in to make up the eight, a very genial Irishman named Conner. Steve was joined in the first group by Ronzo, Jacko and Tom with Dalbs, Walks, Macca and Conner bringing up the tail.
 |
 |
Bombs away . . . in a record effort |
His second shot at the 10th |
Never in the annals of GBWGC history has a ball been pummelled so far off the first tee as Steve's mighty 250m(?) effort. Couldn't quite finish it off, down for 5 and a 2 pt start but nevertheless progressed steadily to be 13 pts after 6 holes at which point Ronzo informed Steve of the policy of the winner writes the report. "I'm OK with that" but immediately wiped the next hole as a few slices crept in. Finished well for a creditable 19 pts. Tom has been in good form and was chasing his 4th consecutive podium appearance. Today was no exception, par and 4 pts at the 10th signalling his intentions. Stumbled a bit with triple to follow but from that point on was very consistent compiling 17 pts including 2 pars to notch a potential winning score.
 |
 |
 |
Steve's 2nd at the (wiped) 16th!! |
Bow legged King Cobra |
A hunting we will go . . . |
Jacko is on a roll continuing his par attack from last week. After 7 holes he was just 4 over off the stick and 16 points. A few errant shots had crept in and he wiped the 17th but bounced back to par the hardest 18th to finish with 19 pts. Ronzo was on fire with great drives early helping to knock out 3 bogeys and a par for 10 pts after 4 holes. After two consecutive NTP's he was hoping for a third and managed to place his ball on the 12th green before Tom cruelled his chance. With 10 pts in the bag his next thought was "How the hell will I have time to write a report and get off early to Binningup to set up?". But then the rot set in and 2 wipes and two 1 pointers later, he was looking at NAGA territory. It fulfilled the prophecy that (rumour has it) Tom had said to Steve "Your old man is gunna come last to improve his handicap for Binningup".
 |
Season's first birdie |
Dalbs didn't know what to expect after the previous week's dismal showing. A strong opening drive, unusually deft pitch to within 1/2 m of the hole and potting the putt for the first season birdie was a complete turnaround. The form reversal and improved putting grabbed three 3 pointers and a strong finish to snare a timely first season win in a tight finish. Macca was at his unpredictable best. His was a slow two hole start and slow two hole finish but in between was a flush of strong long and short shots and steady putts producing 1 par, 2 bogeys and a double for 17 points of his final 22 points. Walks was producing a heady mix of booming drives, some down the fairway a fair way and others bush bound. Top and tailed the first 8 holes with bush bounds for 1 point each on 3 holes, the good starts gathering 13 pts on the intervening 5 holes. His Long Drive win at the 18th produced a handy 3 pts for a 19 point finish. And all the time, Conner was losing many golf balls and creating quite a few sizeable divots but never once looked like producing a club chuck!

ROBIN DALBY SEAVIEW CHAMPIONSHIP
Jacko reports . . . . Finally, a sleep in and a warm morning .. it was the Robin Dalby Seaview Championship and the participants were down to 5, until a large black automobile nudged into the carpark and the ghost of golf games past pushed a very welcome Ironman back into our midst.
Squancey, Dalbs and Jacko led the way (from the blue tees) with mixed results. Dalbs was struggling to keep his ball out of the right rough and used up a lot of shots just getting back to the fairway, wiping 5 holes in the process for a total of 9. Squancey was hitting those familiar long bombs but his short game let him down finishing with 12.
 |
 |

Stooping to a low NAGA score |

Jacko had a consistent day without getting into any real trouble and finished with 7 bogeys and 2 pars for 20 points.
 |
 |
 |
Rarely off target with the long clubs . . . |
. . . and sinking those winning putts |
The second group of Steve, Tom and Ronzo had a solid start with Steve announcing his golfing resurrection by parring the first for 4 points. Another par, a Long Drive and a total of 16 points showed that he will be a force this season.
 |
 |
 |
Up and over |
Relaxed with mates |
Just missed!! |
Tom had an up and down start with 11 points after seven holes but a barnstorming finish saw him hit the sweet spot of 18 points. He’s never won it but he dared to dream, and with 19 points and an NTP after 8 holes it was looking like the year of Ronzo but a wipe at the last cost him his chance for another year.
 |
 |
 |
He's everywhere!! |
Eyeing a great shot into the 6th green |
All concentration |
Off to Il Lido for the post match proceedings with a view of the ocean, clear blue sky and all the sights Cottesloe has on offer. No countbacks to complicate the results, with Jacko taking his second win in as many weeks (and wondering if a threepeat would be worth the devastating blow to his handicap with the BO only a week away). Minor placings filled by Ronzo and TLM. Coffees and chocolate milkshakes with ham and cheese croissants, and chocolate biscuit slice provided by Marg finished another glorious day.

Hamersley, Stableford
Jacko reports . . . . The rain clouds which had cast a pall over the previous day finally dissipated pre-dawn, leaving a dry but chilly morning which had several of our number dragging their winter wardrobe out of mothballs for one more outing.
 |
 |
Morning Glory! |
The ball toss saw Walks, Dalbs and Jacko in the first group, but with Squancey keen to get away first, Jacko stepped back to join Ronzo, Macca and TLM in the second group.
Dalbs was the only one of the threesome to par the first, but this was just a pre-cursor to a somewhat erratic round which left him with 16 points. Squancey had a similar scoring round to Dalbs, running the gamut from 0 to 3 points through the nine, but was left one point shy on 15. Walks wiped the first but scored the rest to close with 16, and belted an unbeatable drive at the last to take LD.
 |
 |
 |
Walks lighting up the 11th . . . |
. . . and taking out the Long Drive |
Well out! |
Ronzo brought out a few of his trademark shots, but indecision over whether he preferred the trees in the deep left rough, or the trees in the deep right rough, ultimately cost him and he returned just 10 points. An NTP win did however help to ameliorate the outing.
 |
 |
 |
Don't look!! |
Ready, aim - for a 1st win |
Avoiding the heat? |
Tom parred the first for 4 and bogeyed the last for 3 but the bits in the middle couldn’t get him past 16. Macca and Jacko both had 2 metre putts at the first, which were threatening to bring an end to the season’s birdie drought, but the sand-filled craters left by the greens-coring program dictated otherwise. From that point their scores diverged somewhat, with Macca adding another 10 points for 14, while Jacko averaged 2 points a hole for the remainder to finish with 19.
The absence of the high scores of recent weeks might lead the cynics to suggest that parties are protecting their handicaps for the up-coming Binningup Open? One count-back to determine second, third and fourth gave the minor podium positions to Tom and Walks, with Jacko posting his maiden win for the season. Coffees and hot chocolate, with shortbread biscuits provided by Marg, capped another great morning.

SPRING CLASSIC
Walks reports . . . .It was the Wembley Spring Classic and 8 Players fronted to play the back nine of the Old Course.
Conditions were perfect. Jacko, Litts, Squancey and Walks teed off first, followed by Ronzo, Dalbs, Macca and Tom.
 |
We're off on a fine misty morning |
Litts finished up on 14 points and was the NAGA on the day. He had only one par and generally his shot making was not up to his usual high standard.
Jacko also wasn’t his usual consistent self. He did get 3 pars but also had 2 wipes. He ended up on 16 points and finished seventh.
Dalbs finished sixth on 18 points. He was a bit slow out of the blocks starting with a couple of 1-pointers but finished strongly with two 3-pointers on the last 2 holes.
Macca and Squancey both finished on 19 points. Macca played consistently for 8 holes but crashed dramatically on the last hole where he had 11 shots. Macca lost the countback and finished fifth. He did have a moment of glory when he hit straight and true and won the long drive prize. Squancey only had one par but scored on every hole. He scored 19 points and finished fourth.

 |
The perennial early morning blinding sun.
("Where did it go?) |
A fantastic out - under the trees and through the gap |
Some good sand play |
Ronzo and Tom both finished on 21 points. Both players had 2 pars and scored on every hole but Ronzo’s pars were both 4 pointers. The countback went back 5 holes to split them. The end result was Ronzo placed second and Tom placed third.
And the winner on the day was Walks. He only had one par in his round but got seven 3-pointers to score to a massive 24 points.
On the day, stableford point scores were higher than usual which sparked post-game discussion about whether we should be playing off the back tees at Wembley.

Hamersley, Par
Squancey reports . . . .It was the 4th round of the 2025 / 26 season, and Par day. Was this chosen in honour of our elder statesman Ronzo as he has achieved the 500 rounds of golf with GBWGC?
We had an early start, teeing off at 5.45am after our newly elected Aló Presidente provided some kind words on Ronzo’s achievement. Squancey, Litts, Tom and Dalbs teed off leaving Walks, Macca, Jacko and Ronzo in the second group.
Squancey continued on from where he left off last week, scoring a + on the first hole. His only minus score for the round was on the 11th hole, where his 3rd and 4th shot were muffed chip shots, plus 3 putts ended up in minus for the hole. The remaining holes, Squancey halved them with the exception of the 17th where he scored a plus, ending up with 1 single plus for the day. Tom had issues with his putting on the first, criss-crossing the green halving the hole with the use of his handicap. His only + came at the 11th after which a few errant shots produced 5 halves and 2 minuses and a total score of -1.
 |
 |
 |
Was driving well today |
An errant shot, but great recovery |
A rare drive off target today |
Litts ended up with a net score of negative 1. His round must have been frustrating as he played to par on only 2 holes. 3 positives and 4 negatives would have made his score go down and up like a pair of prostitute’s pants. Dalbs played the most consistent golf of the 8 players, halving 5 holes and having 2 negative and 2 positive holes. Picking up the longest drive on the 10th was a testament to the standard of golf that he was playing.
 |
 |
 |
 |
Who are you laughing at? |
Twilight fun? |
Straight at it |
Turn left you bugger! |
At the first Walks and Jacko had great recovery for their second shots, but failed to advantage of it. Some shaky putting resulted in Chris halving and Walks with 2 stroke handicap, scored a +. Jacko ended up in total score of -1 having more of an up and down day. Three negatives on the 13th, 14th and 15th did not help his score. It looked like Walks had used up all his good shots in round 2, as this round speaks not of being impressive. 4 negatives and only 1 plus is not good when trying to post a respectable score. A total of negative 3, placed Walks 7th on a count back with Ronzo and Macca who were 6th and 8th respectively. Ronzo - the occasion of the day must have impacted Ronzo’s golf. Starting off with negative scores on the 10th and the 11th is not an effective way to start the round. He came back, halving the 12th and a plus on the 13th. The run was short lived with net scores of negative 2 for the next 5 holes. I fear there is some manipulation of handicaps in readiness for the Binningup Open. Macca last but not forgotten. Macca started off like a man on a mission. Halving the 10th, picking up 2 pluses for the 11th and 12th, and throwing in for good measure, nearest to the pin on the 12th would have, in normal circumstances set himself up for a good score. That was not to be the case. 5 minuses and 1 halve for the 14th put an end to a good score. Little steps will eventually get you there.
Ronzo's 500th
In his 25th season with GBWGC, the Great Man achieved a very significant milestone. He's the fourth member to reach 500 games.
In his quarter century with the club, Ron has amassed impressive:
- Golfing achievements, being second highest in the number of individual award wins and has also won eighteen of the twenty three awards available;
- Social contributions. Together with son Steve, he has facilitated the most memorable Binningup and Mornington experiences and his hosting of the 21st Birthday Celebrations a highlight.
Ronzo has made an indelible mark on the pages of GBWGC's history book. HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS RONZO.

Hamersley, Stableford
Squancey reports . . . Well, another good turn up at the beginning of the season. 6 eager golfers ready to test their golf prowess once again:
Squancey, Walks,
Jacko,
Dalbs,
Tom and
Macca.
Squancey once again needed to leave early, so was on the tee ready to drive the ball. Jacko and Dalbs were directed by Walks to join Squancey in the 1st group. Dalbs was fiddling and farting about (Lea uses the same expression - many times!), so Walks stepped up. Squancey hit his usual fade around the fairway, ending up 65 metres short of the green (it was a cracker). Both Walks and Jacko drove their ball into the trees on the left-hand side of the fairway. Two great recovery shots from Jacko and Walks resulted in their ball landing on the 10th green. Squancey’s second shot was not good, landing short of the green. His 3rd shot, was just as bad, chipping the ball through the green. Walks, with 3 putts ended scoring 3 points while Jacko with 2 putts also scored 3 points. Squancey with 1 foot off the back of the green and 30 feet from the hole, drilled a putt to also pick up 3 points.
 |
That mallard duck's still in the same spot |
Squancey drove the ball well on most holes, but his iron shoots were either leaving the ball short or overshooting the green. His putting saved the day for him. The 14th and 15th holes, where he scored only 1 point each, were the only blemishes on an otherwise consistent round of golf. Walks could not emulate last weeks score. It was a bit of an up and down round of golf, picking up 3, 3 pointers, 1 wipe and 2, 1 pointers. A great drive on the 18th awarded Walks with the longest drive. Chris had one of those days where he was playing frustrating golf, even though he still managed to amass 17 points. His normal putting skills avoided him. One wipe and 2, 1 pointers, blemished an otherwise solid round. Chris picked up 3rd spot on the podium, beating Dalbs on a count back. The 1st group picked up all spots on the podium!
The second group of Dalbs, Tom and Macca, like the 1st group, scored well on the 10th hole, Tom and Macca picking up 3 points each, while Dalbs scored 2 points.

A few wayward shots today |
Great to see Macca getting back into full swing |
Dalbs pared the 11th hole, but only picked up 1 point on the 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th and 18th making it difficult for him to amass a good score. Tom, while picking up 3, 3 pointers, also had a wipe and 4, 1 pointers which did not help with his overall score. He finished with 15 points. On a bright note, Tom picked up closest to the pin on the 12th hole.
Normally when you are awarded a score of ten points, it would be a perfect score. Unfortunately in golf, this is not case. Macca faces challenges, but it's good to see him show up every week. Macca started with a 3 pointer on the 10th, but only scoring 1 additional hole equal to or better than you handicap will prevent you from accumulating a good score. All three experienced the putting blues and their scores were a reflection.

Hamersley, Stableford
SEASON OPENER
The Ghost Who Walks reports . . . First day of the new season and the weather was perfect. 7 good men fronted up and we teed off at 6.15am with the traditional Presidential first drive.

. . . and the weeds were rampant |
Macca surprised everyone by declaring he would play the round, albeit gently. Turned out that he managed quite well. His tee shots and fairway drives got better as he gained confidence that his body was coping with the stretching. Macca declared upfront that he would keep his own scorecard.

He's good, I'll give you the chip |
A metaphor for Litts' round - these final putts just wouldn't go in |
Everybody else put in a fair performance for Day 1. Our 2 low handicappers, Jacko and Litts, were consistent but managed only 1 par each, both finishing with 15 stableford points. On the countback, Jacko finished 5th and Litts was 6th and NAGA on the day.

Birth of a LD win |
A good out |
Tom and Squancey ended up on 17 stableford points each. Both got par on the opening hole but that was the last of the highlights – except for Tom's record breaking Little bounce, the ball whacking into a tree and rebounding back at least 50m to the centre of the fairway. Squancey scored on every hole but many curses indicated that he should have played better. Tom wiped one hole only and muscled the Long Drive. On the countback, Tom got on to the podium finishing 3rd, and Squancey finished 4th.

Bugger. Coodabeen a 27!! |
Finishing 2nd was Dalbs. He scored 19 stableford points. He managed only 1 par but played consistently. |
And the winner on the day was Walks. He snuck over the line with 26 stableford points. He had 4 pars plus 2 other three pointers and no wipes. No doubt he will never repeat this feat again.
[Walks is looking to make the Season Opener his own, winning last year with a score of 21 pts!] |
